7 Myths in Psychology that are still believed in for some reason
Popular-scientific psychology has long been laden with myths that people believe no matter what. Let's dispel some of them.
1. Opposites attract.
The statistics says the opposite: attract people who have something in common, if not explicitly, then in the depths of the soul. And those unions of opposites, as a rule, arise on the banal game of passion, and last not too long.
At any rate, if the couple fails to find common ground.
2. Men are from Mars and women are from Venus.
This is a winged expression that emphasizes the femininity of girls and the militancy of men. In fact, we are all different.
And men can be very sensitive and kind, and about the "iron lady" - everyone has heard too. So we are all from the same planet. By the way, it is scientifically proven that we all experience emotions in a similar way, just someone expresses them, and someone suppresses them.
3. Newborns "copy" their parents.
They say that babies, in facial expressions, gestures, and behavior, use the techniques they have seen from their parents. This, too, is a misconception: babies learn to express emotions regardless of the adults they see.
A baby's smile at a certain moment is nothing more than a coincidence. It's just that it's the coincidences that we tend to notice, and the dozens of times when a toddler doesn't respond to facial expressions, we let it pass us by.
4. Screaming is a way to release bad emotions.
In fact, screaming can't always be a helper. Often, yelling only exacerbates the condition, rather than giving relief to the agitated person at all.
5. After 40, most people experience a midlife crisis.
This statement, too, is erroneous: no more than 155 people in the world go through their forties very sharply. For the majority, it goes smoothly enough, without any crises.
Unless, of course, the person sets himself/herself up, that it's time to start suffering and experiencing.
6. Classical music is the best cure for stress.
This is a myth. If a person doesn't like classical music, Mozart will annoy him. The best medicine is music that is to your liking.
7. Red in a woman's clothing is like a red cloth in the hands of a matador.
This is also a myth. Red is indeed a bright and noticeable color. But if a man is looking for a long-term relationship, rather than a one-night stand, he's more likely to choose a woman who is dressed more modestly.
